Ministry of Sustainable Development
Established in 2005, the Ministry has been at the forefront of Saint Kitts and Nevis’s journey toward sustainability. We are committed to transforming our nation into a Sustainable Island State by 2040, aligning our efforts with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Island State Agenda (SISA).
Our initiatives focus on:
- Ensuring clean and uninterrupted water supply.
- Increasing local food production.
- Transitioning to renewable and affordable energy solutions.
- Promoting circular economic growth and sustainable tourism practices.
- Developing infrastructure resilient to climate change and natural disasters.
Through strategic partnerships at local, regional, and international levels, we aim to create a sustainable future that benefits all citizens of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Who we are
The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action, and Constituency Empowerment serves as the central authority for advancing sustainable development across Saint Kitts and Nevis. Our mandate encompasses the formulation, implementation, and monitoring of national strategies that promote environmental stewardship, climate resilience, and inclusive growth.
We oversee critical areas such as land use planning, environmental conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and community empowerment. Through coordinated efforts with various departments—including the Department of Physical Planning and Environment, the Parks and Beaches Unit, and the Solid Waste Management Corporation—we aim to foster a resilient and sustainable future for our nation.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide a comprehensive framework that supports the implementation of policies, programs, and measures designed to:
- Control and regulate the development of land and buildings.
- Prevent, mitigate, and reverse environmental degradation.
- Promote scientific and technological excellence.
- Raise public awareness and set environmental standards.
- Advocate for sustainable practices and mobilize resources.
By achieving these objectives, we contribute to poverty reduction and ensure the stewardship of the country’s environmental resources, thereby protecting public health through proper planning and development control measures.
